1. Simple Blog Design
I’m sure you’ve heard this phrase before, “Simple Is Best” or, to quote Antoine de Saint Exupéry, “It seems that perfection is reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away”…
Make your blog as simple as possible. How many times have we spent more time trying to get a website looking just right than we do in providing better content? Whilst presentation is important what really matters to your readers is your content.
Write posts that are useful and informative and you will eventually build up the readership that you wish for.
2. Content Is King
Think of it this way. Why do people visit your blog? Because they’re hoping to find useful information relevant to the topic of your blog. There is no other reason. They aren’t coming to view your fancy layout or the new theme that you’ve been playing around with for weeks. They just want to be informed.
You should also make an effort to make your great content easy on the eye. Break up long sentences and if possible keep paragraphs to around two or three sentences. Above all make sure your spelling and grammar are of an acceptable standard.
3. Keep Your Widgets Simple
It may be cool to have the latest high tech widget in your sidebar but before you install it ask yourself if it’s really necessary. Some of them can make your site load slowly and people are impatient these days. They won’t wait.
Also don’t have too many attractions in your sidebar. You want visitors to be primarily interested in reading your content, not the latest ad appearing in the sidebar. I know that you want people to respond to your ads, that’s how you can afford to keep you’re blog running. But you also want repeat visitors and in the long run these are what will make your blog successful.
4. Make Your Blog As Professional As Possible
There are many ways to achieve this. One is to use a standard font size and colour for all the words and functions of your blog. For example, use a blue color to indicate links. In the world of the internet, everyone associates blue with hyperlinks.
Standardize your titles and sub-headings. As I said before keep the presentation simple and easy to read.
5. Repeat Your Best Posts
Your best posts will gradually find themselves getting further away from the front of your blog. Why not rewrite them to get more out of them? Find a slightly different approach to the topic or update the item if appropriate. It will give you fresh content and at the same time give new readers a chance to benefit from your best writings.
